PERCEPTION (OPTICS)
(Optic) eye: meaning the organ of sight. It can also be a surface which is either level plane, concave or convex and which reflects rays of light.
In this series of images I explore perception of natural forms through abstract photography using a mirror as an additional viewfinder. This series was used for my degree show where the images were projected onto the wall while the prints were displayed for our degree show at the London Rag Factory in 2012.
Abstraction can be used as a pejorative term, an indication that something is ‘difficult’ or ‘complicated’. In my work it is a system to transform the known into the unknown by examining processes of framing, composition and perception, thus giving the viewer a fresh look onto the world.
Photography is in a sense a way of abstracting reality into shallow two-dimensional slivers of time. Using a mirror in my photographs has a metaphorical connection with the mirror that sits inside a camera, reflecting the inverted image of reality into the eye of the photographer.
The mirror was revealing a small detail from the natural forms making it look magnified.
Taking the illusional metaphor ‘smoke and mirrors’ as a starting point, I was struck how easily deceived we are by photography through trickery and manipulation.
